One in seven Canadian men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime. Jim Larsen never thought he would be one of them.

In 2015, Jim began to have kidney problems. In extreme pain, he came to Langley Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Room.

Within a day, Jim was diagnosed and sent for surgery to remove the kidney stones but during surgery, Urologist, Dr. Alexandra Perks, discovered abnormal tissue and perform a biopsy.

Jim had aggressive Stage 3 prostate cancer.

Dr. Perks explained his options, helped Jim make informed decisions about his initial treatment and now sees Jim regularly to ensure he receives the best care possible.

“Dr. Perks is still involved because I have a real trust in her,” explains Jim. “It is so important to have this kind of care in a smaller regional hospital, and this is a great urology department here. The quality and ability is on par with anywhere in the Lower Mainland. That is pretty impressive.”

Thanks to our donors, we are able to provide the best surgical equipment to Langley Memorial so patients like Jim, and thousands of others, have access to the care they need, in their community.

But more work needs to be done. Help us buy life-saving equipment, like scopes, and help Langley residents like Jim.
