For us, it was a personal decision but it made sense—we love living in Langley, have deep roots here and felt it was important to give back to the community that has given so much to us.

What will your legacy be?

Watch our introductory video on legacy giving:

Giving a bequest is a personal act that shows great passion for supporting the charities close to your heart.  Perhaps you received excellent care at our hospital and want to express gratitude; maybe you’ve built a successful life and want to give back to the community; or possibly you want to reap the tax benefits that a charitable gift can provide to you and your estate. Whatever your reason, a gift in your Will is a thoughtful investment in health care for our patients, our hospital and our community.

Your legacy is our community’s future.

Leaving a gift to Langley Memorial Hospital through your Will doesn’t restrict you from providing fully for loved ones. The size of gift you leave is completely your choice and any amount you choose will be greatly appreciated and well invested in the future of your community.

Ways to give a legacy gift:

Together, we can ensure that Langley Memorial Hospital has the funds needed to continue to provide the very best health care to Langley residents, well into the future.

Dr. Ben Marr Legacy Circle

Dr. Ben MarrLangley’s first resident doctor arrived in Fort Langley in 1910 and was one of the principal doctors for the Langley area, responsible for the care and well-being of 9,000 patients.

He served in WWI and was an active volunteer in many community organizations.

As early as 1929, Dr. Marr championed the need for a hospital in Langley.  Through his efforts, and many others, the “cottage” hospital was opened in 1948.

Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation honours Dr. Marr’s commitment to our community – as a doctor, soldier and devoted servant to his patients—through our Legacy Giving program.

Resources

The following are some common legacy giving options. Please note, the information below is shared to provide context about Legacy Giving. All options should only be implemented with independent tax and legal advice.

Bequest
A simple and popular way to make a legacy gift is through a gift (or bequest) in your Will. You can specify a dollar amount, a particular asset, real estate, or a portion of your overall estate. You don’t have to have a vast estate to make a bequest. Any value can be given.

Sample Will wording:
I direct my Executors to give to Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation for the benefit of Langley Memorial Hospital the sum of $<amount> to be used where it is needed the most as determined in the absolute discretion of the Directors of Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Endowment
Endowed funds (invested, through a non-profit) provide future security for the Foundation and regular donation for the hospital because the original gift is never spent – it remains intact as a legacy forever. Income earned on that principal is used to support the ongoing needs of the hospital. Endowment income can be designated to a specified purpose or be used to meet the hospital’s highest priority need.

Donations of Securities “In Kind”
Donating certain publicly traded securities “in kind” (or in their current form, unsold) to the Foundation, either while you are alive or through your estate, will exempt you (or your estate) from paying tax on the capital gain triggered by the donation. In addition, you receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the gift, making this strategy an exceptional way to maximize your tax savings while supporting Langley Memorial in a significant way.

Life Insurance
You can easily list Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation as the beneficiary of a new or existing insurance policy. This allows you to make a generous gift at a moderate cost. Insurance proceeds paid directly to the Foundation will not be subject to probate fees. Gifting insurance proceeds can also provide tax relief for you and your estate.

Publicly Traded Securities
Gifts of publicly traded securities can include shares, bonds and mutual funds. Please have your broker call us at 604.533.6420 to advise us of your securities donation. We will provide the brokerage account information and answer any questions. Download our securities donation form.

Charitable Gift Annuities
A Charitable Gift Annuity is an attractive option for donors as it benefits your charity of choice and collects income at the same time. Part of the donor’s gift (typically 25 per cent) is an immediate gift to the charity for which a tax receipt is issued. Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation then purchases a commercial annuity on behalf of the donor with the remaining funds, which pays the donor income, largely tax-exempt, for their lifetime.

RRSPs and RRIFs
Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation can be designated as the beneficiary for your RRSP or your RRIF. This means the assets in the RRSP or the RRIF will pass directly to the Foundation after your death and will not be subject to probate fees. This option can also provide tax relief for your estate.
