We're hiring a Manager, Communications & Marketing at Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation
Employment Status: 1-year contract; Full-time
Start Date: October 16 (TBC with successful candidate)
JOB SUMMARY: The Manager, Communications and Stewardship reports to the Executive Director of the Foundation and is responsible for executing the strategic communication planning and implementation to advance the Foundation’s strategic directives and support the fundraising goals as approved by the Board of Directors. Tactics may include ensuring key hospital stakeholders (including the public) perceive their needs are being met, identifying, and executing on new communications opportunities, establishing and maintaining a high community profile for the Foundation, and developing an annual communications, marketing and stewardship plan. The manager mentors the associated team member(s) within the Communications & Stewardship portfolio.
Duties and Responsibilities
Communications and Stewardship Leadership
- Maintain and execute the strategic communication direction for the Foundation including all marketing, communications and publicity functions
- Oversees staff and contractors within marketing, communications portfolios
- Support the Executive Director with other initiatives as required
- Maintains brand and brand style guides for staff and stakeholder use
- Manage vendors on communications-related items as needed
- Manage the Foundation’s stewardship program: Work with fundraisers to identify, develop and implement acknowledgment, recognition and stewardship strategies that strengthen long-term relationships with donors and sponsors
- Manages the Foundation’s direct mail program: marketing, communications assets and execution of mailings
- Work collaboratively to maintain strong alignment between the Foundation’s communications, administration and fundraising programs
- Crisis management, in collaboration with the Executive Director, of issues that are in or have the potential to move into the public domain
- Monitor and report results, analyse trends and take corrective actions as needed
- Participate on Committees as required
Community and Government Relations
- Create and leverage opportunities for engagement in the community
- Establish and maintain the Foundation’s public image in collaboration with all members of the staff and Board team members
- Pay vigilant attention to advance and sustain the Foundation’s brand in everything the Foundation does throughout the community, driving the brand to position the Foundation as the charity of choice in the Langley/east Surrey communities
- Support Executive Director with materials to advance the Foundation’s advocacy initiatives
Foundation ‘Family’ and Internal Relations
- Maintain a strong relationship with the leadership of Langley Memorial Hospital, Langley Health Services and the Fraser Health Authority
- Manage the patients and patient families programs: Oversee the collection of their good care story and the vetting of the story’s use
- Provide tools to support staff with promoting the Foundation’s presence within the Hospital (including content for billboards, signage, posters and the bulletin board use strategy)
- Participate in Fraser Health publications and online communications
- Provides communications guides to Foundations staff on the Foundation’s work and initiatives, and key issues that concern/influence the Foundation or local health care environment
Media Relations
- Collaborate with Foundation, hospital and community health care services leadership to identify media opportunities and implement campaigns based on an annual calendar
- Manage the Foundation’s relationships with the media and provide coaching to media spokespeople as required
- Draft and issue news releases and articles
- Manage advertising initiatives and editorial space
- Develop and manage tools to measure the impact of advertising/marketing dollars, modify advertising/marketing plan as necessary
Communications Collateral and Channels
- Develop and enhance existing and new communications materials
- Write or produce fund development documents such as proposals, publications and reports
- Write or approve personal acknowledgment and stewardship letters for signature by executives, Board members and key volunteers
- Oversee or produce speaking notes and speeches
- Oversee or produce appeals and cases for support / case statements
- Oversee or produce the design and develop external communication material for use on social media, print, video and electronic media
- Support the Foundation team’s graphic design requirements
Donor Relations
- Support the fund development team in liaising with corporate partners and media, including providing them with information about upcoming events, website resources, etc.
- Manage communications and stewardship activities that support cultivation events involving major donors; attend stewardship and cultivation events if appropriate
- Support event activities associated with fundraising, cultivation and stewardship events involving donors and key stakeholders
Education and Experience
- An undergraduate degree or diploma in communications, marketing, journalism or business, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Five+ years of experience in the communications and marketing field
- Not-for-profit experience is a must
- Experience in social media marketing, event planning and cultivation and recognition events
- Creative design experience would be an asset

- Demonstrated skills in photography is a plus
- Able to use analytical software such as Google Analytics to track performances
- Strong computer skills with proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Knowledge of Mail Chimp or other channels for deploying emails and e-materials
- Understanding of principles and techniques relevant to fundraising
- Knowledge of social media environment and website platforms
Relationships
- Reports to the Executive Director
- Liaises with volunteers, hospital personnel, patient families, donors and potential donors, members of the public, contractors, other Foundation staff members
- Oversees Marketing & Communications Coordinator and contractors such as writers and graphic designers
