Langley donors are showing their greatest strength once again this year as they respond to the hospital's most urgent needs in surgical care.
2024 marked the launch of Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation's campaign to equip our surgical team with the tools they need to perform safe, efficient procedures and help patients recover well and return home faster.
The campaign is off to a strong start: on February 3, the Giving Hearts Gala raised $260,000 to help fund critical surgical equipment for Langley Memorial Hospital (LMH). Since its inception, the Giving Hearts Gala donor community has raised a total of $1,165,000 for the local hospital's urgent needs.
Today, the Foundation is continuing to fundraise for additional surgical equipment to give caregivers the very best tools they need. All gifts to the most urgent needs fund will be matched up to $25,000, thanks to a generous donor.
In the 2022/23 year alone, Langley surgeons provided care to over 12,000 day care surgery patients and performed more than 2,500 inpatient procedures.
As the Foundation continues its commitment to surgical excellence, hospital history shows that the surgical team has the expertise it needs to consistently improve.
Many surgeries - including gallbladder procedures, laparoscopic appendectomies, prostate resections, laparoscopic hysterectomies, hernia repairs, some hysterectomies and ovarian cystectomies - once required that patients be admitted for an overnight stay. Today, many of these procedures are performed in the Surgical Day Unit.
Those who visit the hospital for day surgery find several advantages over overnight stays, including less time spent in hospital, less time lost at work pre-operation and the opportunity to remain in a familiar setting before the operation and recover comfortably at home.
"This is about ensuring the well-being of our health care workers and, by extension, the quality of care provided to patients," says Heather Scott, the Foundation's Executive Director. "Helping our surgeons become more efficient in their work with state-of-the-art tools creates an immediate impact on patients' lives."
